Aeolus wishes you a prosperous and resilient 2021!

Published December 23, 2020

Although 2020 will be remembered for the global pandemic and the disruption it has caused, it has also marked an opportunity of how the world could steer forward and recover from extreme events caused by pandemics and climate change. Sustainability is at the core of such a recovery plan in Europe, and offshore wind will play an important role there. All coastal countries in the EU have already committed or are examining tapping into the offshore wind potential as part of the EU green deal agenda.

Offshore wind keeps evolving in technology and markets with wind turbines having grown to 14MW, hydrogen being considered as a serious energy storage means combined with offshore wind, and Japan and Ireland joining dozens of other countries announcing ambitious offshore wind targets for the years to come. Projects keep getting larger with two records of largest wind farms reaching financial close being broken at the same year: Hollandse Kunst Zuid in the Netherlands of 1.5GW followed by Dogger Bank A and B of 2.4GW in the UK. Oil majors such as TOTAL, BP and ENI are diversifying to offshore wind while corporate PPAs continue to grow with Ørsted and Amazon signing Europe’s largest offshore wind energy corporate PPA.

Aeolus is continuing its offshore wind journey under steady course by providing training and lectures for academia and clients including the National Technical University of Athens, Kingston University, and ESP Renewables. It has provided strategic advisory to a confidential client and is supporting EDF Renewables, one of the largest offshore wind developers, in construction of Neart Na Gaiothe project in Scotland and in development of new projects for the largest market in the world, the UK market.

Finally, it has contributed to a book publication on European Union energy policies released in November 2020, covering what the future holds for offshore wind in Europe and worldwide and how Europe will stay ahead of the curve for the years to come. May 2021 bring more resilience and smiles!
