Aeolus celebrated in 2021 five years of serving the offshore wind market and adding value to the projects it has worked. 2021 has been a very busy year for Aeolus with versatile offshore wind services provided to developers, governments, and academia. A snapshot of selected projects in 2021 is provided below. We thank our customers for their trust!

Offshore Wind Regulatory Framework Greece: Aeolus was commissioned to act as the offshore wind technical expert for the development of the regulatory framework of Offshore Wind in Greece. Aeolus has provided critical input on the development of the legal and regulatory framework considering good industry practice from European projects and particularities of the Greek market. The work has been supervised by the Hellenic Ministry of Environment and Energy and was funded by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

Floating Wind Technical Lead: Aeolus has been supporting Blyth 2 offshore wind project as technical lead for the turbine and foundation packages since 2020. Blyth 2 is an up to 58.4MW floating offshore wind farm developed by EDF and the first to be deployed in English waters. Work included setting up procurement and execution strategy, managing the delivery of the metocean report to inform the floating wind design, developing employer’s requirements and invitation to tender documentation, and following up with contractors for the wind turbine and foundation packages towards FEED work.

Feasibility study: Aeolus has concluded a feasibility study for a 500MW offshore wind farm development. The work included an evaluation of the technical feasibility of the proposed wind farm considering several technical constraints against good industry practice.  An initial design of the wind farm was developed that included selection of appropriate wind turbine type, design of wind turbine layout, selection of foundation type and initial design of the electrical infrastructure. Local ports and local industries were considered for developing a project execution plan and the O&M strategy. The feasibility was complemented by an overview of development expenditure, capital and operational expenditure and an estimate of the local jobs to be created and the positive impact to the local economy.

Interface Management: Aeolus provides Interface Management for the under construction 450MW Neart Na Gaiothe project in Scotland, the first offshore wind farm having all 54 turbine jackets drilled at the sea bottom. Aeolus amongst others has supported the completion of design of one of the first bird monitoring systems that will be deployed to further understand bird flight patterns and collision risks.

Academia presentations: Aeolus has been providing offshore wind lectures to Kingston University in London and the National Technical University of Athens masters students, informing future professionals about real life examples and the challenges of offshore wind.
